These free programs are very helpful. I have used them for a long time without any problems. However, I can not make any claims that these programs will not cause you some unknown problems.

Anti Virus software needs to be updated at least weekly or daily. AVG is a good alternative to costly virus software.

Spyware can get on your computer just by surfing the internet. Spyware tracks everywhere you go on the internet and then reports your surfing history / information to marketing organizations that you probably know nothing about anywhere in the world.

Your computer gets a lot of garbage and unneeded files placed in your internet cache when you surf. This takes up space and can also be a favorite place for spyware, malware, and a virus to hide.

Even though Cleanup was intended to erase all your tracks on the internet, it is an excellent free little program to clean out all stuff that gets into your computer. It will also free up space on your hard drive. Run it once a week.

Cleanup will go out and remove all this garbage, files, cookies you get while surfing.

Spyware and Virus' can actually slow your computer down. You may get a shock the first time you run Adaware. It's not uncommon to have over a 100 spyware programs silently running in the background without you knowing.
